In order to make it a smooth start for the little ones, always be prepared. I tend to get everything sorted before the holidays so we can enjoy it instead of stressing about what needs to be bought/ordered.

Things like school socks, shoes, books, bags and essentials - I like to order these from home so it can arrive in plenty of time. Or I get the little ones involved, and make a day out of it, so they get excited about all the new school stuff they'll soon get to wear.
Chat to the kids about what's coming up in the new year and what your daily morning routine will be like so it doesn't come as a surprise... for anyone! Doing a few practice runs of the routine is also a great way to stay ahead of problems that might occur in the midst of the morning rush hour.
Once you've practised your morning routine a few times, you can tweak things to ensure a smooth start for all. It also helps make them feel safe and comfortable with minimal stress on the morning of the first day.
I like to have as much as possible ready in the evening. This includes having lunches, clothes and the school bags packed all ready to go so we don't have any niggly things to worry about the next morning.
