It’s here, it’s here! Our new Mickey & Friends range for kids, bub and women has finally arrived at Bonds. Mickey Mouse is back in the house, but this time he’s joined by Minnie Mouse and friends, Goofy, Pluto, Donald and Daisy Duck. To celebrate the launch of our latest Disney collaboration (and because we all know how we like to boogie at Bonds) we’ve created this Mickey and Friends mash-up video to bust a move to. THE STORY BEHIND THE RANGE
Find out more about how this magical range came about in these interviews with Tara from Disney’s Consumer Product team, and our own Bec Watson from the Bonds design team.
Q&A with Tara from Disney:
What’s it like working for an iconic company like Disney?
Honestly, it’s like a dream! There’s nothing but pride when you talk about the company you work for, to see that reaction in everyone’s eyes when they realise you’re talking about the company that they grew up with. My desk is covered in toys, artwork I’ve found and kept for my artboard, and products we have been working on because I love to be surrounded by it all. I still grin like crazy when I see someone wearing a product I’ve worked on.
What is your job at Disney?
My official title is Product Development Executive, Softlines (Softlines includes fashion, home and infant).
What does a typical work day for you look like?
Each day can be quite different. I start with my product concept approvals, so all of the companies I work with have to submit their concepts either in email or in our online approval system. After 6 years, I seem to have held a lot of artwork info in my memory, so I can often remember if we have something similar to what people are asking for. We have about 2,000 different style guides online, and then about 1,000 in our office. Then it’s on to any creative projects I’m working on, which can include trend direction for a season/retailer, inspiration and mood boards, pitch documents for new ranges or retailers, designing ranges for inspiration or to be sold at retail. We are generally working on product 6 months in advance at a minimum.
What has the creative process between Disney and Bonds been like?
Bonds were a complete dream to work with. Sometimes it can be really overwhelming in the beginning, as working with Disney means SO many artwork choices, and it can be tricky knowing where to start! We discussed the different Mickey art styles, and about utilising the rest of the gang (Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Pluto and Goofy).
What level of archive access has Bonds been given and how has this influenced the final range?
With Bonds, we knew that they would love to have something special, so we gave them the opportunity to go through all of our original archived character art. We also have the original movie guides that are only prints outs, which have been opened up to Bonds. These guides go back to the late 90s!
What’s your favourite product from the new Bonds x Disney range?
I absolutely love the ‘Mickey and Friends’ yardage with all of the gang. Pluto is one of my faves, so I’m always excited to have him on product!
Who is your favourite Disney character and why?
Can I say a couple? The most random one, Rainbow Unicorn from Inside Out. I feel like she’s my spirit animal sneaking the donuts, and I love her rainbow hair! My fave princess is Snow White, but that may be because of the brunette bob. And then my fave to work with for product is Mickey. He’s completely versatile and goes with every trend! And Pluto, because I love dogs. Sorry, it’s really hard when there are SO many amazing characters to choose from.
Q&A with Bec from Bonds:
What are some of the key differences between this second range and the first?
Introducing Mickey and his friends for our second collaboration and bringing the whole gang together.
What’s it been like working with Disney and having access to their archives?
It’s been a really great working relationship with Tara and the team at Disney. Their knowledge of the brand is so strong and they have welcomed us with open arms.
What’s it been like working with such loveable characters such as Mickey and Friends?
It has been such an exciting opportunity for the team here at Bonds to work with such an iconic company, the energy and passion of all who have touched the product has been amazing.
What has been your favourite thing to work on in this latest range and why?
The bright saturated fluro prints and strong line artwork. It’s been so much fun play around with the background colours on the products.
What is it about the Bonds x Disney range that makes it such a favourite amongst customers?
Mickey has appeal for young and old- we have used the same prints across all ages. Also our access to the Disney archives is a great reminder of how the history of the company has evolved over time.
