BONDS100 ART INSTALLATION: MEET NATHAN NANKERVIS
Posted in: people

Young Melbourne graphic artist and illustrator, Nathan Nankervis, has been catching the attention of many lately with his colourful creations that make you feel ALL the good feelings. Since recently graduating from Swinburne University, Nathan has been busy building a portfolio of his cartoon-like drawings and attracting clients left, right and centre.

So naturally when it came to commissioning our 100th birthday mural, we jumped at the chance to include Nathan (and his mad illustrative skills!) As one of six insanely talented artists to work on the epic art installation, Nathan added his own spin on what Bonds means to him, which you can now see on display at Melbourne Central. Find out more about Nathan in our Q&A with him below…

What does Bonds mean to you? Good ol’ Aussie socks and jocks.

What Bonds item can't you live without?

My jocks.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Bold, colourful, exuberant and anthropomorphised. Fun is definitely the over-arching theme.

NathanWork4 What got you into typography? I guess it was in primary school, I’m not sure if it was just my school or if everyone did it, but around grade 3/4 everyone seemed to write all their headings in ‘bubble’ writing. That’s where it all started for me. Not that I’m really a typographer or anything, but that’s when I first fell in love with playing with letters.

NathanWIP1 What was the inspiration for your Bonds design?

That Bonds is for everyone.

When you think of Bonds, what springs to mind?

That Chesty Bonds guy. Also a real weathered, super Aussie old guy in a ridiculously dusty and worn singlet. He's the kind of guy that has at least 20 of them, but that one’s his favourite.

If you could be any font, which one would you be, and why?

Definitely Comic Sans. You can tell he doesn't take life too seriously; he's always having a laugh and trying to have some fun. I could just imagine hanging out with like Times New Roman, he'd just be rambling on about the stock market or complaining about the weather. Comic Sans is fun!
