We absolutely love your surfboard designs; how did you get into shaping?

When I was around 15 I snapped my board and couldn’t replace it… I didn’t have the money to. I ended up giving up my easter school holidays to do voluntary work experience at a surfboard factory in Mona Vale, sweeping floors etc. When the owner realised I was there on my own accord, not a school program, he showed me the basics of shaping. I was basically hooked from day one. I designed my logo shortly after, coded my first website and started the Haydenshapes brand. Next year will be 20 years, which is a little crazy.

Can you tell us where you draw inspiration for your beautiful board designs?

Everywhere. I love design and new technology… I look for a lot of influence both within and beyond the surf industry from anywhere from architecture, to travel, photography and automotive. I am always sourcing weird materials and recently have been working with prototyping using aerospace resins.

How old were you when you first started surfing, and what sparked your passion for the ocean?

I started surfing when I was 4 years old. Even from that age, I was always really intrigued about surfboards and how things were made.

You’re currently based in LA, where the new BONDS SWIM campaign was shot; what made you make the move?

I have lived in LA for around 5 years, and Haydenshapes has had an operation/office there for nearly 4. In 2011, we expanded internationally. The US is a major market for surfing, so it made sense to relocate there and grow the brand - all whilst juggling our Australian operation and team.

What do you miss most about Australian beaches?

I am fortunate enough to travel back and forth to Australia a lot and always feel at home with the countless beaches to surf at. They all have their own personality that you learn as a surfer. The white sand and clean water is always enjoyed.

What are your top 3 favourite Aussie beaches?

 Whale Beach, NSW

Winki, Manly, NSW

Treachery, NSW

What do you love most about an Australian summer?

Aussie summers keep you guessing… The conditions are forever changing. Surfing until 9.30pm during daylight savings is pretty cool too.

Surfing is obviously a healthy and fun way to stay active while enjoying the great outdoors; do you have any tips for beginners wanting to start?

Foam top boards are the best place to start and will make it fun. Small point breaks like Noosa and Byron are perfect for beginners.

Is there anything you don’t go to the beach without?

For me, a surfboard. Always.

Finally, we heard you’re a fan of Bonds; can you tell us what you love most about Bonds and your favourite item?

I’m definitely a basics person and love the jersey knit range – black, white, grey. I basically only wear bonds socks and underwear and will even get it shipped out to the US. It’s definitely my go-to Aussie brand.
