BONDS x SHITBOX RALLY, DESIGNED BY SIMON DEGROOT
Posted in: people

In case you missed the news, Bonds is getting behind this year’s Shitbox Rally by sponsoring a team (sisters Heather and Tracey) to take on the challenge. Now it’s with much excitement that we can reveal our team will hit the road in a colourful custom-designed car created by renowned contemporary visual artist, Simon Degroot. Too much fun!

The Shitbox Rally is an annual motoring event and Australia’s largest private fundraiser for the Cancer Council. Average Aussies sign up to drive thousands of kilometres across the outback in old rust bucket cars (a.k.a. “shitboxes”) worth no more than $1,000 to raise money for cancer research. Each team is given the task of decking out their “shitbox” in the most imaginative way possible to make it standout from the car crowd! With this in mind, we invited Simon to work his artistic magic and give our team’s car a “Bondsy” makeover using our new BONDS100 logo waistbands and native prints as inspiration.

Based in Brisbane, Simon’s creative interest is engaging images from visual culture and art history and re-imagining these forms in abstract paintings. His artworks and murals have been exhibited across Australia and he’s commissioned works for The Brisbane Hilton, Queensland Rail and the Brisbane City Council, just to name a few.

This year’s Shitbox Rally kicks off tomorrow in Canberra and runs until May 15th where teams will finish up in Townsville via the Birdsville Track. We’re proud to sponsor such a worthy cause and wish Heather and Tracey all the very best for the journey ahead. In this Bonds-branded baby, you won’t be able to miss them!
