Wonderbumsᵀᴹ Life Cycle Analysis

In 2023, we undertook a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which is a scientific data assessment to identify the environmental impact of our reusable nappy (with insert) over its entire life cycle compared to disposable nappies.

The LCA looked at raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, customer use and the products’ end of life.

Did you know over a 12-month period a baby uses approximately 1500 disposable nappies. No sh*t!

If you make the switch to using Bonds reusable nappies during the day you can save approximately 1100 disposables nappies and over 95kg of waste going to landfill in a year.

For 12 months daytime use, you only need 12-16 Bonds reusable nappies vs. approximately 1100 disposable nappies.*

*Data based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of one Bonds Wonderbums reusable nappy with insert compared to 100 disposable nappies. Comparison with 100 disposables based on assumption in LCA that the lifetime of a Bonds Wonderbums reusable nappy is at least 100 washes.

We put our Bonds reusable nappies through an LCA to see their impact on global warming potential (Co2 eq. emissions).** Overall, using Bonds re-usable nappies has 69% less Co2 eq. emissions than using disposable nappies.

  • The LCA shows that the energy used during washing creates the most carbon emissions. Which is why we remind customers to wash
in no warmer than 40ᵒC, then line dry to
reduce energy.
  • Our second highest emissions came from the manufacturing process.
  • The manufacturing process involves the cutting, sewing, dyeing and packaging of the re-usable nappy and insert. The impacts in this stage are
based on the energy used in each of these processes.
  • While disposable nappies showed less impact in the use phase, they contributed significantly higher carbon emissions in the manufacturing and end of life phases in a full lifecycle analysis.

**LCA assumes the lifetime of one Bonds Wonderbums reusable nappy and insert is at least 100 washes (with 60 wees, 40 poos) following the care instructions of cold machine rinse, wash up to 40ᵒC and line dry as compared with using 100 disposable nappies.

Overall, the LCA shows that Bonds Wonderbums reusable nappies’ water consumption is 190L higher than disposable nappies over its lifecycle. This is due to the water used when washing Wonderbums. To minimise water usage, wash with other clothes for a full load.

The manufacturing stage also uses water in the fibre and fabric production processes. The water usage for Bonds Wonderbums reusable nappies in manufacturing is 30L lower than disposable nappies.**

This LCA is aligned with the ISO standards for LCA: ISO 14040:2006 and ISO14044:2006, and is independently third-party verified.
